Westlaw and WestlawNext for Judiciary Employees

Frequently Asked Questions

I have a Lexis ID. How do I get a Westlaw ID?
Please go to https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/westlawpassword and fill out the form. Judges (except Orphans' Court judges) do not need to fill out the form. Their registration keys will be automatically generated.

How long will it take to get my ID?
Those who complete the online form before March 15 will receive their registration key by the end of March. For others we expect the time to be about 2 weeks.

How will I receive my ID?
Your registration key will arrive via email from thomsonreuters.com. At the bottom of the email will be a link that says "Active Now." Click on that link and set up your OnePass UserName and Password.

What is OnePass?
A OnePass profile is a username and password that can be used across for both Westlaw and WestlawNext.

What is the web address for Westlaw Classic and WestlawNext
For Westlaw Classic go to westlaw.com and for WestlawNext go to next.westlaw.com

How long my Lexis ID work?
Your Lexis ID will be good through April 14, 2013.

I don't have a Lexis ID. Can I get a Westlaw ID?
Maybe. If your job requires legal research, ask your supervisor to email lawlibrary@mdcourts.gov to request a user ID. To assist us with making the transition from Lexis to Westlaw as seamless as possible, we ask that these requests wait until early April, if possible.

What is the difference between Westlaw and WestlawNext?
WestlawNext searches multiple databases at one time. The interface is similar to popular search engines. Results can then be filtered by court, date, source, etc. All other materials are available in both systems. Please note that your password can be the same for both Westlaw and WestlawNext.

Will there be in-person training?
Yes, see below for dates and time. Training is planned for Annapolis and larger circuit court law libraries and will begin in March.

How do I find out what materials are included in the Maryland Judiciary's Westlaw/WestlawNext subscription?
This is easiest done in WestlawNext. From the WestlawNext homepage click on "Tools" in the browse tab and then click on "My Content." Items that are linked can be searched individually. At this time United Kingdom case law and the 50 State Survey builder are only available in Westlaw Classic.
