Lexis Advance

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can use Lexis Advance?
Any member of the Maryland Judiciary with an active Lexis ID.

I lost (or did not receive) the email containing my temporary Lexis Advance password.
First, check to makes sure your welcome email is not in your spam folder. Next, email lawlibrary@mdcourts.gov with your Lexis ID, your email, and phone number. Library staff will contact Lexis to have the Welcome to Lexis Advance e-mail re-sent.

How do I access Lexis Advance for the first time?

  • Go to http://advance.lexis.com
  • Enter your current Lexis ID
  • Enter your temporary password included in your "Welcome Letter" from Lexis. You will be required to change your password the first time you login. You may use your current Lexis.com password.
  • Click "Sign In"

What browser do I need?
For Windows XP Lexis Advance requires Internet Explorer® 7.0, 8.0, Google Chrome, or Firefox® 3.x. For other operating systems see http://tinyurl.com/bsctdmt. Pop-up blockers should be disabled.

Lexis says I need to install Silverlight. Is that okay?
Yes, some computers will require Silverlight installation.

Does Lexis Advance include all content available in the current version?
Almost. Lexis Advance includes all primary United States law available in Lexis.com

Can I still use terms and connectors?
Yes, but in some cases the syntax has changed. See Terms and Connectors in Lexis Advance for a complete list.

Can I download results in WordPerfect or a Word .doc file?
No. The only options available are PDF and .docx which requires Word 2007 or above. We suggest saving files in PDF or you can install the Microsoft Compatibility Pack to read docx files in older versions of Word.

Can I search by Topic and Headnote?
No, this feature is not available in this release but is possible to limit the search via Practice area or Topic.

Will there be training?
Yes. Most of the larger circuit court law libraries and the Maryland State Law Library and other circuit court libraries will be scheduling training sessions starting May 2012.

Will Lexis Advance replace the current version of Lexis?
No. For the foreseeable future both products will be available.

Can I share documents in my folder?
Not at this time. Lexis is looking into adding this feature.

Is there an app?
Yes for Apple products, iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. At this time there is not an app for Android. See http://www.lexisnexis.com/newlexis/mobile/.
